BIOGRAPHY

Mattijn Seip, a notable figure in Dutch cinema, emerged from the prestigious Nederlandse Filmacademie in the early 1960s alongside influential contemporaries like Wim Verstappen and Pim de la Parra. His standout work, *Schermerhoorn* (1967), is particularly prized among collectors for its bold exploration of the film medium itself, a hallmark of Seip's structuralist approach. This film, along with his earlier work *IJdijk*, challenged conventional narratives and pushed the boundaries of filmmaking during a transformative era in Dutch cinema. In 1968, driven by a desire for creative freedom, Seip co-founded STOFF, a collective that sought to democratize the filmmaking process. This move not only reflected his progressive ideals but also spawned a series of innovative projects, including the later works *Double Shutter* and *After the Colours* (1972), which further captivated cinephiles. As a director who transitioned into socially critical narratives in the 1980s, Seip's influential body of work continues to resonate within the physical media community, making his films essential additions to any serious collector's catalog.
