Most HD DVDs sell for $3 to $15, since the format had a short life and a limited catalog of common studio titles. The exceptions are the HD DVD exclusives that never reached Blu-ray, which can run $30 to $100 or higher, and sealed copies, which carry a premium given the format's age.

Exclusivity is the whole story. When the format lost the war and shut down in 2008, a number of titles that only ever shipped on HD DVD were never ported to Blu-ray. For those films the HD DVD pressing is the only high definition disc that exists, which is what collectors pay for.

The valuable ones are titles that received an HD DVD release and then never got a Blu-ray, often because of studio rights shuffles after the format folded. Studio-exclusive catalog titles from that window are the category to look for. A film widely available on Blu-ray will almost never be worth much on HD DVD.

Combo discs carried HD DVD on one side and a standard DVD on the other, sold so buyers could use them before fully committing to the format. They are common and usually inexpensive, though a combo of an exclusive title or one with distinctive packaging can still draw interest. For most titles the combo format does not add much.

For format collectors and home theater enthusiasts who want a complete record of the format war era, yes. The catalog is finite, which makes a full collection achievable, and the dedicated community values the historical significance. It is a niche, but a real one.

Sealed copies are especially prized because the format is old and was never reissued, so clean original stock is finite. Among opened discs, an intact case and a clean disc matter most. For common titles condition barely moves an already low price, but for exclusives it counts.

Yes. HD DVD players were discontinued after 2008, along with the dual-format players and the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on. Working players are themselves collectible now, and the need for dedicated hardware is part of why the format stays niche. None of this stops the discs from holding value for collectors who have a player.

HD DVD and Blu-ray launched as competing high definition formats, and Blu-ray won on studio support and the boost from the PlayStation 3 carrying a Blu-ray drive. Toshiba ended HD DVD in early 2008. That abrupt finish is exactly why certain exclusives were stranded on the format and became collectible.

Search the title in the checker for the current range, then check eBay filtered to HD DVD. The key question is whether the title ever came to Blu-ray. If it did not, you likely have one of the format's exclusives, which is where the value sits. Thin listings are common here and can point to a harder to find disc.
