A Hero's Death

The documentary recounts the largest escape attempt in the history of the Berlin Wall. On a single night in October 1964, 57 East Berliners endeavored to cross the border into West Berlin through a tunnel. As the last individuals were nearing safety, East German border guards became aware of the escape and opened fire. In a remarkable turn of events, all the refugees and their escape agents made it out unharmed, although a tragic incident resulted in the death of a 21-year-old border guard, Egon Schultz.
