A Little Monk

The story centers on nine-year-old Do-nyum, who has spent his childhood under the guidance of an elderly master. Despite the strict regimen of Buddhist teachings, meditation, and chores, he grapples with feelings of abandonment and yearns for connection with the outside world. His longing for his mother, whom he cannot remember, adds depth to his character as he navigates the complexities of his life as a monk.

Accompanied by an older monk named Jung-sim, who faces his own challenges on the path to enlightenment, Do-nyum's journey is marked by the tension between his monastic duties and his desire for a typical childhood. As the temple's groundskeeper offers reassurance about his mother's return, Do-nyum's patience wears thin. Ultimately, he contemplates adoption by a wealthy widow, showcasing the emotional conflicts inherent in his upbringing and the search for belonging.
