A Private Affair (2002) has this gritty, almost claustrophobic atmosphere that really pulls you in. The pacing can be a bit uneven at times, but it kind of adds to that sense of unease, you know? The character of Francois Maneri is layered, a divorced detective whose personal life bleeds into his investigation. The themes of loss and obsession are palpable, especially as he digs deeper into Rachel's life. The performances, while not necessarily showy, feel grounded and real. There’s a somewhat raw quality to the film, particularly with its practical effects during the more intense scenes. Not your typical crime thriller, it lingers in your mind long after the credits roll.
