Across the Road

The story follows author Jean Dorset, who is grappling with writer's block and financial difficulties despite his previous success. He and his wife, Michelle, receive surprising news that they have inherited the estate of a wealthy neighbor, M. Guillemet, whom they have never met. The inheritance comes with two peculiar conditions: they must leave Guillemet's papers untouched and keep his live-in maid, Clemence Richbourg, employed.

As they settle into their new home, the Dorsets uncover the unsettling truth behind Guillemet's generosity. He had set up a camera with a zoom lens aimed directly at their bedroom window, which leads to a mix of shock and disgust for the couple.
