Along Came a Spider has a gritty vibe that feels pretty grounded for a thriller. Lee Tamahori directs a decent cat-and-mouse game with Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, who’s drawn back into the fray after a senator’s kid gets snatched. The pacing is a bit uneven at times, but the tension builds well in certain scenes. The performances, especially by Freeman, keep it engaging, though the plot can sometimes become convoluted. There’s a solid atmosphere created by the urban settings and a haunting score. It’s not as flashy as some of its contemporaries but has its moments that linger, especially if you appreciate character-driven narratives in your thrillers.
