An All-Consuming Love

The film follows Gao Zhijian, a teacher and friend to married couple Li Xiangmei and Hou Xinming. As the Pacific War disrupts their lives, Xinming is drawn into underground activities, leaving Xiangmei and her blind mother in a precarious situation. Zhijian supports them financially, while Xiangmei takes a job as a song girl to make ends meet, complicating their friendships.

As the war progresses, Zhijian faces arrest for his anti-Japanese teaching. Xiangmei and her friend Liu Qing intervene, leading to his release. This experience deepens Zhijian's feelings for Xiangmei, creating a tension between friendship and love. The film culminates with the return of Xinming, who, now disabled, reunites with his family, prompting Zhijian to step back from his feelings for Xiangmei, illustrating the sacrifices made in love and friendship during wartime.
