The film centers on Doyle Simms, who escapes his dysfunctional family to pursue a film program across the Hudson from New York City. As he faces the trials of his first year, financial struggles lead him to adopt a dual life, living out of Penn Station while attending school.

Throughout his college years, Doyle encounters various characters, including Saul, a homeless book dealer who imparts wisdom through his unique perspective on life, and Allyson, an aspiring actress who becomes the object of his affection.
