The story follows Gottfried and Markus, two friends who have shared many experiences, including school, vocational training, and army service. As they prepare to leave for Dresden to study physics, Gottfried has a change of heart. He decides to stay behind to become a home educator after encountering a runaway boy. This decision strains his friendship with Markus, leading to tension and unexpected developments.
