Basic (2003) is one of those films that plays with the viewer's perception of truth. John McTiernan manages to give it this gritty, atmospheric feel, fitting for an army base in the middle of a hurricane. The pacing has a deliberate tension, almost like the calm before the storm, and it really pulls you into the chaos that ensues. You get two sides of the story from the recruits, and the performances, especially from John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, are quite strong, adding layers to the unfolding mystery. The practical effects during the training scenes lend a rawness that CGI often misses, making it feel more grounded. It’s a twisty narrative about trust and deception that holds up on rewatch.
