Bastard Swordsman is an interesting blend of action and drama that dives into the underbelly of a kung-fu school. The pacing can be a bit uneven, but it’s the character dynamics that really stand out. Yun Fei Yang is an orphan who navigates the harsh world of bullying among the students, and his relationship with the master’s daughter adds a layer of emotional depth. There’s a gritty feel to the practical effects and fight choreography which, while not always slick, have a raw energy that pulls you in. The themes of perseverance and friendship amidst adversity are palpable, making it a unique watch in the genre, despite its rough edges.
