Before Dawn (1989) is this raw depiction of survival set against the backdrop of WWII. You get this intense atmosphere from the start, with a train crash that leaves only three survivors: a young NKVD lieutenant and two prisoners—a thief and a repressed Communist. The performances are gritty and really pull you into their moral dilemmas. The pacing is deliberately slow at times, which feels right for the somber themes of trust and betrayal. The practical effects in the train wreck scene are surprisingly effective, and there's this haunting score that underlines the tension. It's not flashy, but it lingers with you, sort of forcing you to ponder the heavy choices these characters face in a world ravaged by conflict.
