The story unfolds in October 1989, in a part of West Berlin known as SO 36, which had been isolated by the Berlin Wall for 28 years. This setting showcases a vibrant yet lethargic community of students, artists, and bohemians living among the decaying architecture. Frank, the barkeeper, embodies this lifestyle, as he drinks, interacts with patrons, and pursues a casual relationship with cook Katrin.

As political tensions rise with the Wall's impending collapse, Frank's routine is disrupted by unexpected visits from his parents and changes in his relationships.
