Borderland is one of those 1937 Westerns that has a particular charm. Directed by Nate Watt, it's got that classic feel but with some quirky twists. Hoppy, or Hopalong Cassidy, really gets to stretch his legs – going deep undercover as an outlaw. The humor is darkly playful, especially when he’s being mean to kids, which is a nice change of pace. The pacing feels right – it doesn’t rush but also doesn’t drag. The practical effects are solid for the time, and Loco, the villain, is delightfully portrayed as this feigned simpleton. There’s an engaging atmosphere throughout, and while it’s not groundbreaking, it has its own unique flair that makes it stand out in the genre.
