Bugs (2003) is one of those films that really leans into the horror of the unknown. The atmosphere is thick with tension, as we follow FBI agent Matt Pollack into the depths of an unfinished subway tunnel. It's a slow burn, but when that scorpion-like bug appears, the pacing kicks into overdrive. The practical effects are noteworthy, especially for a low-budget flick; that creature design is both grotesque and captivating. There’s a certain gritty realism in the performances, too, especially Pollack's struggle against an unseen menace. It explores themes of fear and survival in a confined space, which adds to the claustrophobic feel. Definitely a unique entry in the horror/sci-fi genre, but not for the faint-hearted.
