The story follows Paulina, who is married to the cowardly Camillo Borghese. Eager for attention, she performs naked in front of crowds at Villa Borghese, which she has converted into her private residence. This leads to her notoriety as a depraved figure, prompting advice from the Pope to distance her from men.

As the French troops expel the Pope and cardinals from Rome, Paulina resorts to prostitution to fulfill her desires. After seven years, Villa Borghese is reopened to the public, and Paulina returns to Paris, much to the relief of both the Roman populace and the clerical establishment.
