Cactua

Cactua is a short film that combines fantasy elements with experimental cinema. It showcases a creative partnership between director Kristian Day and make-up artist Patrick Boltinghouse, who designed makeup for Pride Weekend 2010 in Des Moines, Iowa. The film was inspired by a spontaneous moment when Boltinghouse, adorned with makeup and a bird on his shoulder, prompted Day to capture the scene on camera.

The film was shot entirely in Day's home and features two distinct versions: a single play version and a "locked groove" version that was presented on a loop at the Resident Artists: Guns Blazin' show in Des Moines on July 9, 2010. Cactua not only reflects the vibrant LGBTQ culture of its setting but also emphasizes the experimental nature of the medium through its unique storytelling approach.
