C.I.A. Code Name: Alexa has this gritty, late '80s to early '90s vibe that really stands out in the action/thriller genre. Merhi does a solid job balancing the tense moments with some over-the-top action sequences. The pacing is interesting; it ramps up nicely once the terrorists get involved with the microchip. The performances aren't necessarily Oscar-worthy, but they bring a certain raw energy to the film. You can tell they tried to make the practical effects work, and some of them actually land well, especially during the prison break scene. Themes of betrayal and espionage run throughout, giving it a surprisingly layered feel for a straight-to-video flick.
