Cleopatra (1963) is one of those grand, sprawling epics that really feels like a product of its time, yet still manages to feel a bit over-the-top today. Mankiewicz's direction brings an almost theatrical quality to the performances, especially from Elizabeth Taylor, who pours a commanding presence into Cleopatra. The production design is a standout, with those massive sets and costumes that were both lavish and detailed, reflecting the opulence of ancient Egypt. The pacing varies quite a bit; some scenes linger indulgently while others rush through key moments. The practical effects, like the naval battles, hold up reasonably well. There’s definitely a sense of ambition throughout, though you can argue it meanders a bit too much at times.
