Das Lächeln der Tiefseefische

The film follows Malte, a nearly 18-year-old boy living with his alcoholic father in a rundown house on the island of Usedom. With a deceased mother and a sister who has left, he grapples with an empty household budget while holding onto his dream of obtaining a driver's license and escaping his circumstances.

Malte's life takes a turn when his sister and young nephew Lukas return, adding complexity to his desire for independence. Meanwhile, he finds himself drawn to Annika, a vacationer who represents a glimpse of a different life. The film paints a poignant picture of a young man's struggle for autonomy amid familial obligations and personal aspirations.
