The film follows François de Rougemant, the second son of a rural French noble family, as he navigates the complexities of life at the Louvre Palace in Paris. Unfamiliar with courtly life, François finds himself in a perilous situation after winning a duel against an opponent from a powerful family. The tension escalates as he fears retribution for his victory.

Count Clément, who stands by François as his second in the duel, advises him to flee to avoid the consequences of his actions.
