The story follows 15-year-old Klaus, who struggles to fit in after moving from Potsdam to East Berlin. He faces challenges, particularly with a popular classmate named Heinz. With the guidance of their teacher Magnus, Klaus and Heinz eventually reconcile and become friends. However, the unexpected death of Magnus leads to further tensions as the class is taken over by a young teacher, Anne Morgenstern.

As Klaus and his classmates adjust to their new teacher, they confront their biases and learn to work through their differences. However, Heinz refuses to accept her, creating a divide within the class. This film captures the complexities of adolescence, friendship, and authority in a historical context that reflects life in East Germany during the 1970s.
