The story follows Martin, who returns home from Greenland with a good sum of money. Settling down with his sister, who runs an inn, he discovers that much has changed, particularly that his childhood sweetheart, Martha, is now married to Just Hovmand, the owner of Lunehøj farm. When Just faces financial difficulties, Martin is eager to help, but Just refuses to accept assistance from him.
