In this film, young archaeologist Robert returns to Salzburg after years in Crete, intending to end his engagement with his fiancée, Hannah. However, his life becomes intertwined with the political chaos surrounding the Austrian coup of 1934. Robert and Hannah find themselves in a village where tensions rise between coup plotters and Home Guard troops.

As the situation escalates, Robert tries to protect a defenseless deaf-mute who is targeted as a scapegoat by creating a fictional character, the "man in the reeds."
