So, 'Der tote Onkel' from 1982 is one of those curious gems that kinda straddles the line between crime and fantasy, with a dash of mystery woven in. The atmosphere is oddly surreal, and you can almost feel the tension in the air as Joseph von Träubesser navigates his family's expectations while trying to carve out his identity as a painter. The pacing has this somewhat languid feel but works well, allowing you to really soak in the characters' quirks, especially Leonid, his slightly unhinged nephew. The practical effects, minimal as they are, serve the story rather than overshadow it, which I appreciate. Performances are a mixed bag but somehow add to that off-kilter vibe this film has.
