The film centers on Catherine Delaunay, a 25-year-old runner who becomes the French champion after a competitor is disqualified for drug use. Faced with an injury, she turns to anabolic steroids and growth hormones at the urging of her German trainer and an unethical doctor. As she becomes more dependent on these substances, Catherine experiences severe physical and mental side effects.

Catherine's struggle is compounded by the pressure to maintain her competitive edge. She keeps a stash of clean urine to avoid detection, highlighting the lengths she will go to for success. Eventually, when she attempts to compete drug-free, her performance declines, leading to further desperation.
