The plot centers around Lena and Wolfgang Breuer, whose baby, Jakob, is abducted from his stroller during a brief lapse in attention. Despite an extensive search, Jakob is never found, leaving a deep emotional scar on his parents. Twelve years later, Wolfgang has come to terms with the loss, but Lena remains haunted by her son's disappearance.

When Lena discovers that Jakob is living as Tim, the son of single mother Carola Weber, she is consumed by the desire to reclaim him.
