The story unfolds outside a courthouse in Berlin, where a pensioner named Margarete Altenburg shoots a homeless man, Hellmer, who escapes unharmed. Lawyer Joachim Vernau becomes involved, offering his assistance to Margarete and traveling to her hometown to collect her belongings.
