Dissonance (2015) is quite the interesting piece. Director Till Nowak weaves a narrative that blends adventure with this surreal atmosphere of animation. The story unfolds in a spherical city, which is really distinctive, and the cylindrical piano adds a unique visual element that you don’t see every day. The pacing is reflective, with moments that linger, especially when we see the pianist's struggle with his reality as a street musician, and his desire to connect with his daughter through music. The performances, especially by the dwarf assistant, bring a sort of whimsy that contrasts nicely with the deeper themes of connection and longing. There’s a blend of practical effects that enhance the dreamlike quality too. Overall, an interesting exploration of music and relationships.
