Divorce Italian Style

The plot follows Ferdinando Cefalù, who is trapped in an unhappy marriage and desperate to wed his young cousin Angela. Since divorce was illegal in Italy during this period, Ferdinando plots to provoke his wife Rosalia into adultery so that he can kill her and benefit from a lenient sentence under the honor killing laws then in place. He enlists a painter to seduce Rosalia, but his plan backfires when she remains faithful, complicating his scheme.

Director Pietro Germi co-wrote the screenplay, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Marcello Mastroianni’s portrayal of Ferdinando combines charm with cynicism, perfectly capturing the social hypocrisy the film critiques. The supporting cast includes Daniela Rocca as Rosalia and Stefania Sandrelli in her film debut as Angela.
