Dracula II: Ascension is an interesting mix of horror and medical thriller, dropping a group of medical students into a dark, twisted situation with the notable Count. The film leans heavily on atmosphere, with some gritty practical effects that give it a raw edge. Patrick Lussier's direction is pretty effective at building tension, especially in those claustrophobic moments in the lab. The pacing has its ups and downs, but the themes of greed and the moral dilemmas tied to the pursuit of immortality are intriguing. The performances are decent, though nothing groundbreaking. It’s distinctive for its take on the Dracula mythos, showing how the allure of blood can lead to some seriously dark places.
Released on DVD and VOD, not in theaters.Features practical effects for many of the horror elements.Shot primarily in Canada, keeping a tight budget.Part of a loose trilogy, following 'Dracula 2000'.
