Earthquake

"Earthquake" focuses on the events following the 1976 earthquake in Jinfeng, highlighting the contrasting responses of Liu Xu, a proxy for the Gang of Four, and Party Secretary Li, who seeks to aid the local populace. The film addresses themes of power and responsibility in the face of disaster.

It was shot on location in the aftermath of the Tangshan earthquake and completed in August 1977. Initially intended as a critique of the Gang of Four, the film's narrative evolved following their arrests. Despite its ambitious scope, "Earthquake" faced significant challenges, screening only once in Guangzhou before being censored and sealed away.
