The film follows Confederate Colonel Lafe Harvey as he navigates the aftermath of the Civil War. Upon returning home, he must break the news of his brother's presumed death to his niece, Betty. Their journey takes a perilous turn when scavengers attack their family home, forcing them to flee westward in search of safety.

Simultaneously, Betty's father, General John Harvey, is seriously injured but alive. With the assistance of a Union soldier named Tom, he makes his way to a deserted plantation, determined to reunite with his family.
