Empire

Empire tells the story of Anna Elizabeth Heegaard, a wealthy "free colored" woman who owns slaves and embarks on a love affair with the governor-general of the Danish colony, Peter von Scholten. The film intricately weaves together moments of communal feasting and discussions on social reforms, all while a slave boy ominously cools the diners with a feather above the table.
