Fakin' Da Funk is a curious blend of comedy and drama, really capturing the complexities of identity and belonging. The film follows Julian, a Chinese kid adopted by a black family, and May-Ling, the Asian exchange student. Their attempts to fit in within a predominantly black neighborhood of South Central opens up a lot of discussions on race and cultural expectations. The pacing is a little uneven, but it tends to work in its favor as you get to dwell on the characters' experiences. Performances have a raw authenticity that feels real, rather than polished. The practical effects are minimal, but there’s a certain charm in the way it's shot, giving it a genuine vibe. It’s definitely worth a watch for anyone into niche 90s films with a unique perspective.
