First Cow is this quietly powerful film that kind of sneaks up on you. Set in the early 1820s Oregon Territory, it really captures that raw, rugged atmosphere of the time. Kelly Reichardt takes her time, letting the story unfold at a deliberate pace that mirrors the lives of its characters. The performances, especially from John Magaro and Orion Lee, feel so genuine, making you root for them despite their questionable choices. The whole milk-stealing scheme is both a comedic and a poignant reflection on friendship and ambition. What really stands out is the practical effects and the way it feels like you can almost taste that fresh milk they’re after. It’s an ode to the simple things that connect us.
Deliberate pacing enhances the narrative.Strong themes of friendship and ambition.Richly atmospheric and grounded performances.
