Commissioned for Creative Time’s RET.inevitable, Flagpole Special is a DV short that showcases John C. Reilly and Chris Penn from the waist down. The film explores themes of bravado in pickup seminars, serving as a precursor to the more developed ideas seen in Anderson's later work, Magnolia.

Initially screened once under the Brooklyn Bridge, Flagpole Special has not seen a commercial release. Its limited exposure and unique presentation contribute to its classification as a lost film.
