Flash Gordon (1980) has this wild, campy energy that’s hard to resist. Directed by Mike Hodges, it’s got that vibrant color palette and surreal production design, almost like a comic book come to life. The performances are a mixed bag – Sam J. Jones plays Flash with a certain charm, but it’s really Max von Sydow as Ming who steals the show with his menacing presence. The practical effects have that rough-around-the-edges quality, giving the film a unique texture that you don’t see in today’s CGI-heavy flicks. The pacing? It's a bit erratic but fits well with the overall tone. The soundtrack by Queen is something else too, just adds to the eccentric atmosphere.
Released by Universal Pictures in 1980.Features practical effects and miniatures, no CGI.Score by Queen, adding a distinct rock vibe.Filmed in various locations including the UK and Italy.
