Footsteps in the Sand

The film follows Slavi, who recounts his life's journey to a customs officer at an airport. His story begins with a passionate teenage romance with Nelly, which takes a tragic turn when she falls for another man. This heartbreak leads Slavi down a path of struggle, as he faces challenges with alcoholism and the Bulgarian police due to his family's background.

In pursuit of a better life, Slavi decides to defect to the West, navigating through a refugee camp in Austria before arriving in the United States. There, he finds new friends and embarks on an adventure, symbolized by his purchase of a truck and an arrow amulet from an Indian vendor, which he believes will help him reclaim his lost love. The narrative culminates with Slavi's return to Bulgaria, where he discovers the changes brought by the collapse of communism and the new life that Nelly has built without him.
