Furcy

Set in 1817 on Bourbon Island, Furcy follows the story of an enslaved man who discovers a letter of emancipation among his deceased mother's belongings. This discovery fuels his determination to challenge his master, Joseph Lory, with the help of abolitionist prosecutor Gilbert Boucher.

The film chronicles Furcy's arduous legal battle over nearly three decades, during which he faces imprisonment and exile in Mauritius. His journey culminates in 1846, when he brings his case before the Royal Court of Paris, ultimately achieving legal emancipation. Furcy’s story is significant, as he stands out in French history as one of the few enslaved individuals to win such a legal battle before the abolition of slavery took place.
