Ghostbusters II has this quirky charm that really captures the late '80s vibe. Ivan Reitman keeps the humor light yet grounded, and the pacing flows well enough that you don’t feel dragged down by the narrative. The practical effects really shine, like the encounter with the painting of Vigo, which is surprisingly creepy for a comedy. The ensemble cast brings back the chemistry, and Bill Murray's dry humor continues to be a highlight. The themes of redemption and community resonate, even if it feels a bit more sentimental than the first film. The ectoplasm river is a neat visual, and there's something about the neon glow of New York that makes it feel unique for its time.
Released June 16, 1989, in the US.Runtime of 88 minutes, rated PG.Features practical effects by the legendary Industrial Light & Magic. The film's budget was around $37 million.
