Grindhouse presents two distinct movies within one experience. Planet Terror follows a group of survivors fighting zombie-like creatures after a biochemical attack, blending horror with dark humor. Death Proof centers on a stuntman who uses his car as a weapon against young women, delivering an action-packed thriller with intense chase sequences.

The project was a collaboration between Rodriguez and Tarantino, who sought to recreate the drive-in double-feature experience popular in the 1970s. They included fake trailers between the films to mimic the feel of exploitation cinema, complete with intentional film damage and grain to enhance authenticity.

Casting featured genre staples and rising stars alike. Kurt Russell plays the antagonist in Death Proof, while Rose McGowan leads Planet Terror. Stuntwoman Zoë Bell performs her own driving stunts, adding realism to the action scenes. The films also feature notable appearances by Josh Brolin and Rosario Dawson.
