Half Past Dead is an interesting entry in the early 2000s action genre, blending crime and thriller elements amidst a prison backdrop. The atmosphere is gritty and tense, especially with the high-tech prison setting that feels both futuristic and claustrophobic. The pacing has its moments; there are quick bursts of action that keep you on your toes, but it also takes time to develop the plot surrounding the death-row inmate and that elusive gold stash. Steven Seagal's performance is, as usual, a mix of stoicism and martial arts finesse, which fans of his work will appreciate. There's a certain rough charm to the practical effects and action choreography that give it a unique flavor. It's a film that knows what it is, and it leans into that with a certain confidence.
