Hidalgo is an interesting blend of adventure and Western, set in the late 19th century. It features Viggo Mortensen as a Pony Express rider, and his horse, Hidalgo, is almost a character in its own right. The pacing has a nice, steady build - it doesn't rush, allowing the landscapes to breathe, and the practical effects give it a gritty authenticity. You get a real sense of the desert's harshness and beauty. The themes of friendship and perseverance shine through, making it more than just a race movie. The visuals are striking, especially the vast Arabian landscapes. It's not groundbreaking, but it has a certain charm and spirit that makes it memorable in its own way.
