His Debt

His Debt tells the story of Goro Mariyama, who runs an ethically operated gambling house and uses its profits to assist the less fortunate. After being shot by gambler Blair Whitcomb over a lost bet, Goro survives thanks to nurse Gloria Manning, who is engaged to Blair. The plot thickens when Goro confesses his feelings for Gloria, only to learn she cannot love him due to racial differences.

As Goro recovers, he confronts Blair for a bad check and ultimately has him arrested for attempted murder. Gloria's plea for Blair's release creates a complex moral dilemma for Goro, leading him to facilitate Blair's escape as a form of gratitude for Gloria's earlier kindness. This film explores themes of love, sacrifice, and societal barriers that were significant during its era.
