I Always Wanted to Be a Gangster is this oddball gem that weaves together four vignettes, all centered around wannabe criminals with lofty dreams. The tone dances between humor and a sort of bleak realism that really captures the absurdity of their aspirations. Each segment has a distinct flavor yet maintains a cohesive atmosphere, exploring themes of ambition and failure. The pacing can feel a bit uneven at times, but that only adds to its charm, if you ask me. The performances are raw and genuine; you can almost feel the characters’ desperation. There’s a certain DIY vibe to it, which makes the practical effects and production design feel more grounded. It’s definitely not your run-of-the-mill crime comedy.
