Iron Eagle is a quintessential 80s action flick, blending a coming-of-age story with military bravado. Doug, played by Jason Gedrick, is on a personal mission that feels both earnest and a bit over-the-top. The pacing is brisk, typical for films of this era, and the aerial combat scenes are pretty engaging, especially considering the practical effects used. You get a real sense of camaraderie and tension, especially between Doug and Colonel Chappy, played by Louis Gossett Jr. The film leans heavily into themes of loyalty and the bond between father and son, which gives it a certain weight, even if it sometimes veers into cliché. The soundtrack, with its synth-heavy score, really sets the tone for the whole thing.
Released by TriStar Pictures in 1986.Filmed using actual military aircraft for authenticity.Louis Gossett Jr. received praise for his performance.Notable for its synth-driven score by Basil Poledouris.
