King of Texas is quite a curious piece, really. Directed by Uli Edel, this 2002 TV movie airs out a reimagined King Lear in the rugged Texas landscape, and it’s just fascinating how they blend Shakespearean tragedy with western grit. Patrick Stewart, as John Lear, really brings that weighty gravitas to the role—his performance carries the film. The pacing flows like a slow river, which fits the theme of family betrayal and the fall from power. The practical effects are understated yet effective, capturing the sprawling Texas ranch life without excess. It’s not your typical Western; it’s more about familial decay, loyalty, and the harsh realities of life. Definitely an interesting watch for those who appreciate the melding of genres.
Great for those who enjoy adaptations of classic literature.A unique portrayal of Shakespeare’s themes in a Western setting. The performances, especially Stewart's, are a highlight.
