Leap of Faith is an interesting blend of comedy, drama, and a touch of romance, directed by Richard Pearce. Steve Martin plays Jonas Nightengale, a rather dubious faith healer, which gives the film a charmingly cynical edge. The pacing has this nice ebb-and-flow; it builds up during the revival scenes but then takes a quieter, reflective turn as Jonas faces his own moral dilemmas. The performances, especially by Martin and Debra Winger as his manager Jane, have a genuine chemistry that holds the film together. You get a good mix of humor with some moments that really make you think about belief and deception. There's a certain atmosphere that hangs over the revival scenes—almost a carnival feel, but with a hint of sadness that makes it distinctive.
Steve Martin's performance is a highlight. · Interesting takes on faith and deception. · Unique mix of humor and drama.
